Children's Ministry Essentials 4: The role of play in faith formation

About this course

The famous children’s theologian Jerome Berryman said that ‘play is the work of the child’. In this he recognises the importance of play not just in a child’s physical, emotional and intellectual development, but also in their spirituality and faith development. This module explores some of the reasons why play is important and what impact play might have on emotional and physical wellbeing. It considers the benefits and drawbacks of digital play and offers insights on how storytelling and different types of play can be used as effective tools in our work. Play requires creativity and imagination and so this module also encourages us to think about how we can be more creative and innovative in our approach to our engagement with the children we work with.
